Jan Leishman Tapestry Weaver

Welcome to leishmanart.com.

I weave tapestries on a loom as artworks in the technique perfected in medieval times and continued today in places like the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

I design and weave them in a small studio behind my home.

My work has been exhibited in regional and private galleries. As well, several of my tapestries were included in the 2008 International Tapestry Symposium in Canberra and the Celebration of Tapestry in Warrnambool. I have work in private collections across Australia and New Zealand.

I am passionate about wool as a fibre, but am not averse to using anything that can be woven - such as material strips, silk or metallic thread.

I love strong and vibrant colours and colour harmonies as well as quirkiness in design, while retaining a great respect for the history and tradition of tapestry weaving.

My fascination with both medieval and contemporary tapestries has led me to France where we have a small house www.thehouseinprovence.com which enables me to see tapestries and weavers in places like Aubusson and Angers.

I have most recently completed a series of 16 tapestries depicting the endangered Golden Sun Moth http://goldensunmothtapestry.blogspot.com

As a founder member of the Off the Rails Gallery I also show my work regularly in my home town of Dunkeld in Victoria's Western District.
